The awards were handed out Sunday. Caitlin Clark was named the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year. She and Kelsey Mitchell made the AP All-WNBA First Team. Across the court, A’ja Wilson earned AP Player of the Year for the third straight season, while Jackie Young made the Second Team. Tonight, all that talent meets one simple question: Can Indiana keep its season alive?
The Fever earned this chance over 44 games. They finished 28–16 and scored 96 points per game, the highest average in WNBA history. Clark and Mitchell became the highest-scoring pair of teammates in league history, combining for 47 points per game. Indiana also won two of its three regular-season meetings with Las Vegas. This team has already shown it can beat the Aces.
But Sunday belonged to Vegas. Wilson put up 38 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks in a 102–85 Game 1 win. The Aces turned Indiana’s 17 turnovers into 28 points. Las Vegas came into the playoffs at 31–13, riding a seven-game winning streak, and looked every bit like a team chasing another championship.
Now the series moves to Indianapolis. Indiana needs a cleaner offensive game, a stronger answer for Wilson and the energy of a home crowd that knows what is at stake. There is no time to wait for Game 3; the Fever have to earn it tonight.
Clark’s comeback season brought her back to this stage. Mitchell helped make Indiana’s offense historic. Their next chapter is still theirs to write.
Win tonight, and the series goes back to Vegas. Lose, and the season is over. Fever fans, this is the one to show up for.
